Monkey Phonics heads into the final NCAA choices with a huge lead. But each of the Top 5 have chosen a different champion. I haven't worked out the numbers, but I can imagine that it's possible that any of them might have a chance of winning. Here are the Top 5 scores and chosen champion: --XXX--

MonkeyPhonics: 5,017/LEADER/Duke --XXX--
almadenmike: 4,774/(-243)/Kansas --XXX--
UM Ftball Tiger: 4,747/(-270)/Gonzaga --XXX--
backcourt: 4,744/(-273)/Kentucky --XXX--
monarchfan91: 4,611/(-406)/Arizona

Not much margin for error, but a chance nevertheless

The Top 5 all missed The Mount's win tonight, but only Monkey Phonics picked Kansas State's victory. So he's widening his lead! Bummer for us!

just did a quick calculation, there are still 627 points maximum, as of 2:04 CST, that you can gain. Very much in it, but you can't afford to lose many states... need all the electorate you can get. Especially in the late rounds.

In the last three rounds -- Elite Eight (20x-seed), Final Four (40x) & Championship (80x) -- Monkey Phonics has only one of the seven game winners in common with the #2 & #3 players (me and backcourt), only two in common with the next two (UM Ftball Tiger & monarchfan91) and NONE in common with #6 Tiki Owl. It looks like it could be a wild finish!

In the final three rounds, perfect scores would net Monkey Phonics 460 points (180+120+160), me 300 points (140+80+80), backcourt 440 points (160+120+160), UM Ftball Tiger 240 points (all chalk: 80+80+80), monarchfan91 400 points (120+120+160) and Tiki Owl 280 points (120+80+80).

With correct calls on St. Mary's' and Northwestern's wins, backcourt should pass me. But won't gain any on Monkey Phonics, who had the same picks on those games.

Gotta give Monkey Phonics credit for knowing his #8 seeds. First Michigan in the Big Ten tournament, now Wisconsin ousting defending champion and #1 seed Villanova. WTG, MP!

Monkey Phonics had some very painful results this weekend. He had Duke as his champion ... and Louisville into the Final Four and St. Mary's winning a Sweet 16 game. With their ouster from the tourney, MP's maximum score is reduced by a whopping 360 points.

Backcourt's maximum score is reduced by 140 due to losses by Louisville, Villanova and Duke. He had Villanova in the championship game.

Five of their Sweet 16 winners are still alive.

My maximum score is down by 70, due to the Villanova and Duke loses. I had Duke making the Final Four. Six of my Sweet 16 winners are still playing.

MP stil has a prodigious lead: 259 points ahead of backcourt and 267 points beyond me.

If backcourt's picks are perfect for the rest of the tournament, he'll gain 350 points on Monkey Phonics and pass him and win.

If, instead, my picks are perfect, I'll gain 330 points on Monkey Phonics and win.

As ICB said earlier: "Not much chance for error."

UM Ftball Tiger's perfect finish would gain only 200 points on MP, short of his 323-point deficit.

monarchfan91 would gain 400 points on MP with a perfect run to the end. But that's just less than the leader's current 433-point advantage.

Tiki Owl has so far scored more in the tournament than those above him, but perfection to the end only nets him 290 points more than Monkey Phonics, not nearly enough to overcome MP's 445 point lead over Tiki.

This contest could be decided Friday. ... If Wisconsin beats Florida in the late Sweet 16 game, Monkey Phonics will win. >>XXX>>I gained 50 points on him Thursday, but I'm still 217 points behind. If I'm perfect for the rest of the tournament, I'll gain an additional 260 on him. But if Wisconsin wins on Friday, he gets 80 points, boosting his advantage over me to an insurmountable 297. >>XXX>> The same is true for backcourt. He's down 249 now, and his perfect potential is a gain of 300. But a Wisconsin win would push MP to a can't-be-beat 329 point-margin over backcourt.

Wisconsin lost on that incredible last-second overtime 3 last night, but I was eliminated earlier, when UCLA tanked against Kentucky. In the remaining games, I can still gain as many as 200 points on Monkey Phonics, but I'm 217 behind, so a close second is now my best finish.

-->>XXX<<-- Backcourt still has a chance to win, however. He's 229 behind and can gain up to 300 on MP. But if on Sunday night North Carolina beats Kentucky, who backcourt has to win it all, it's all over.

-->>XXX<<-- If Kentucky wins Sunday but doesn't go all the way to the NCAA title, then Monkey Phonics would win our contest without having a correct pick in the Elite Eight, Final Four or Championship Game.
